New series of ARCAM AV amplifiers

New series of ARCAM AV amplifiers

While these were announced way back in February it's only in the past few weeks that stock has arrived for us to play with, listen to and learn about. We have three models of amplifier and a processor to evaluate. Is an amplifier at £ 2599 entry level? It is in the Arcam range!

While the AVA15 can process 12 channels it has only 9 channels on board, the extra 3 would need an extra power amp. The 9 channels of 80 watt, more than enough for most systems, are delivered by digital Class D amplifiers, 10 years ago D Class was only for cheap systems but it has improved dramatically. We've been blasting the AVA15 in our demo cinema set up and it sounds great. A substantial step up from the £1000-2000 Marantz/Denon/Sony/Onkyos.

All the usual toys are included, Spotify/Tidal/Qobuz Connect Dolby Atmos DTS-X and Dirac as well as Bluetooth and Airplay.

Next up is the AVA25 which has all the same toys and can also process up to 16 channels with 9 channels of 100W Class AB onboard. The reason for buying it is simple. It actually sounds better. In stereo or surround vocals are clearer and everything is more dynamic and lifelike. That's what you pay £ 3999 for!  It's not to do with the extra 20 watts, it is just better.

And so now we change it all over again and set up the AVA35. All 3 use a set up system called Dirac which gets rave reviews. It is very good although it takes ages, measuring sound levels at 9 different room positions while in silence. No talking allowed!

With only 10 watts different in the specifications can this justify £ 2000 more? Yes, and the reason is Arcam's signature amplifier layout, Class G. This gives more precision in every word, sound and guitar lick taking the overall enjoyment to another level.

While an amplifier like this with better control can grip your speakers to glean every possible detail it also deserves the most realistic speakers. With every amplifier here we used the same Kef R series set up.
